How to check net speed on your phone
Tap Start. This free net speed test measures ping first, then downloads data for seven seconds and uploads for six. The big number is your download speed in Mbps (megabits per second). The verdict places it against typical 4G and 5G, and eight boxes turn it into things you do every day, so you can tell whether the connection is actually enough. It works on Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL mobile data, on 5G, and on any WiFi or broadband connection.
- Close apps that are downloading or playing video, so they do not share the line.
- For a mobile data speed test, switch WiFi off. For a WiFi speed test, stay connected to your router.
- Tap Start and keep the phone still until the three bars fill.
- Tap Test on WiFi (or mobile data) to compare the two. The page keeps your last five results on this phone.
What is a good internet speed in India
- Under 2 Mbps
- Messages and web pages only. Video keeps buffering.
- 2 to 8 Mbps
- Reels, YouTube at 720p, voice and video calls.
- 8 to 25 Mbps
- 1080p video, large app updates, a hotspot for one more person.
- 25 to 100 Mbps
- 4K video, fast downloads, two or three people sharing.
- Over 100 Mbps
- Nothing on a phone needs more. Extra speed only shortens big downloads.
For comparison, Opensignal measured these average mobile download speeds in India for October to December 2025: Jio 107.3 Mbps, Airtel 58.2 Mbps, Vi 25.1 Mbps and BSNL 9.0 Mbps. On 5G the averages were 198.9 Mbps on Jio, 185.9 Mbps on Airtel and 134.8 Mbps on Vi (Opensignal). Upload on mobile networks is usually a tenth of download or less, which is normal.
Why the speed is lower than your plan promises
- The plan is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Operators sell "up to" speeds. The network is shared with everyone on the same tower or fibre node, so evenings and weekends are slower.
- Signal. One or two bars of 4G or 5G can mean a tenth of the speed you get with full bars. Walls, lifts and basements cost the most.
- Your WiFi router. A fast fibre line through an old router, or from two rooms away, often tests far below the plan. The WiFi tips above show how to tell the router from the line.
- Daily data limit reached. Jio, Airtel and Vi drop to 64 Kbps after the pack's daily data, and BSNL to 40 Kbps, which shows here as under 0.1 Mbps.
- The phone itself. A 4G-only phone, or a 5G phone with 5G switched off, cannot use a faster network. Check your exact model with What is my phone? and see the 5G tips above.
Frequently asked questions
Is this net speed test free, and do I need an app?
Yes, it is free, and no. It runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer. There are no ads and nothing to install.
Does it work as a Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL speed test?
Yes. It tests whatever network the phone is using and names it in the result, and the tips above open on your network by themselves. Switch WiFi off first so the test runs on mobile data.
How does the test work?
Your phone downloads and uploads data from a nearby test server on Cloudflare's network and counts the bytes against the clock. Ping is the time a tiny request takes to go there and back when the line is quiet. When busy is the same delay measured while the download is running; if it jumps far above ping, calls and games will stutter whenever something else is downloading.
Why is my result different from Speedtest or Fast.com?
Each test uses a different server, a different number of connections and a different moment in time. A difference of 10 to 20 percent between tests is normal. A difference of several times usually means one of the tests hit a congested server, or your signal changed between runs.
What is the speed after the daily data limit?
64 Kbps on Jio, Airtel and Vi, and 40 Kbps on BSNL, until the data renews. That is enough for text messages but not for video.
Why does my 5G phone show 4G?
Usually one of these: the plan does not include 5G, 5G is switched off in settings, battery saver is on, you are outside 5G coverage, or the phone lacks the band your network uses. BSNL has no mobile 5G yet.
Does "5G" in my WiFi name mean 5G internet?
No. It marks the 5 GHz WiFi band from your router, which is faster than 2.4 GHz near the router. 5G mobile data comes from your SIM.
How much data does the test use?
Up to about 100 MB per run, and the exact amount is shown after each test. Faster connections use more because more data moves in the same seconds. If you are on a small daily pack, test on WiFi or run it once.
What is ping, and what is a good ping?
Ping is the delay before data starts moving, in milliseconds. Under 50 ms feels instant and is good for online games. 50 to 100 ms is fine for everything else. Over 150 ms makes video calls talk over each other and games lag, even when the download speed looks high.
Why is my upload speed so much lower than download?
Mobile and most home connections are built that way, because people download far more than they upload. Upload at a tenth of download is normal. It only matters when you send large videos, back up photos or stream live.
